Card colours can change dramatically between screens and photographs because lighting, camera processing, monitor settings and reflective surfaces affect appearance. A digital product image is not an exact colour measurement.
Lighting changes colour perception
Warm bulbs can make a yellow border look orange, while cooler daylight can make blue tones feel more intense. Reflections from foil can add bright highlights over printed pigments. A dark studio background increases perceived contrast, which may make the same card appear more saturated than it does against a white desk.
Screens add another layer
Two phones can display the same picture differently because of brightness settings, colour profiles and automatic enhancement. Compressed online images may lose subtle gradients or create false texture. Even a carefully edited photograph is ultimately a representation viewed through a screen, not a direct sample of the printed card.
What helps buyers compare fairly
Look for multiple angles and a consistent neutral reference, ideally under simple daylight. A seller should distinguish colour treatment of the background from changes to the card itself. If a particular shade matters for a themed display, ask for a direct photograph instead of relying on a highly stylized promotional scene.
Practical collector action
When documenting a card, use one consistent area with diffuse light, avoid colour filters and retain the original photo file. A comparison across different sessions is less reliable if the camera has changed exposure or white balance.
Is a vivid product photo evidence of superior ink?
No. The appearance may reflect lighting or editing; a claim about printing performance needs evidence about the actual item.
