Choose protection for the intended use
Soft sleeves are useful for basic surface protection, while an outer rigid holder can add resistance to bending. Some collectors use both together. Make sure the inner sleeve fits without forcing the corners, and do not assume every unofficial reproduction shares exactly the same dimensions as an official card. Check the physical item before purchasing specialized accessories.
Avoid introducing damage while sleeving
Work on a clean table with dry hands, hold the card by its edges and avoid dragging the printed face across rough material. If dust is visible, do not rub the surface aggressively. Sliding a card in at an angle or forcing it into a tight sleeve can stress corners and edges. A sleeve with grit inside may do more harm than good.
Keep identification clear
Sleeving is also an opportunity to preserve information. If a card is an unofficial reproduction, store that fact in your inventory or on a separate backing note. Never insert adhesive labels directly against artwork. Clear identity matters as much as preserving a tidy display.

Before placing a new proxy in a sleeve, compare its dimensions to the accessory, check that the sleeve interior is clean and record the card's set and reproduction status. Stop if the sleeve feels too tight.
Should I use a tight-fitting inner sleeve?
Only if the fit is appropriate for that physical card. Excess pressure can damage corners, regardless of whether the card is authentic or unofficial.
