How to Check Print Alignment Without Damaging a Card

You can assess visible alignment by photographing a card flat under diffuse light and comparing the printed border margins. Avoid bending, scraping or repeatedly removing the card from protective sleeves.

Set up a simple inspection area

Use a flat, clean table and an uncluttered background. Diffuse daylight or a soft lamp helps reduce glare. Position the camera directly over the card, ensuring all four corners appear in the frame. This reduces perspective distortion that can make a level card seem trapezoidal.

Compare internal and external margins

Inspect the distance between the printed design boundary and the card's physical edge on corresponding sides. Consider that original layouts can be intentionally asymmetric. Alignment is a question about how the image sits on the physical cut, not whether every printed element is mathematically centered in the artwork.

Avoid false precision

A screenshot with unknown cropping or a photo taken at an angle is not a reliable measuring instrument. If precise values matter, use a consistent measurement method and note uncertainty. For unofficial reproductions, visual alignment may influence display appeal but does not establish authorized production.

Practical collector action

Photograph once, crop only the surrounding table, then inspect opposite margins side by side at ordinary zoom. Save the unaltered original before any adjustment so you can revisit your assessment.

Is a slightly off-center card necessarily damaged?

No. Printing and cutting variation can affect centering without indicating later physical damage. Assess the specific item and intended use.
